Clothes turned pink in the wash: how to fix a colour run

One red sock, one pink load. Here's what actually gets transferred dye out, in the order to try it.

Step1

Pre-treat and rewash

  1. Rub a heavy-duty liquid detergent into the pink areas, then rinse. [5]
  2. Wash again at the hottest temperature the care label allows, with your usual detergent. [5][6]
  3. Check it while wet. Still pink? Go to step 2. Don't dry it.
Step2

Oxygen bleach soak

US university extension guides all say to soak in a diluted "all-fabric" (oxygen) bleach next. In UK shops that's an oxygen stain-remover powder such as Vanish Oxi Action. [5][6][7]

  • 60 g scoop to 4 L water
  • Whites: 6 h max
  • Colours: 1 h max

Vanish UK's own soak instructions for its Oxi Action powder: [8][2]

  1. Add one scoop (60 g) to 4 litres of water.
  2. Soak whites for 6 hours maximum. Soak colours for 1 hour maximum.
  3. Rub the stained areas, then wash as usual or rinse well.

For whites, Vanish recommends the Crystal White version and suggests adding another scoop to the follow-up wash. [2]

Tip

Test any product on a hidden area first. [9]

Step3

Colour run remover

Whites and colourfast items

Test first

A colour run remover destroys loose dye. It can also strip the garment's own colour, so do the colourfast test below first. [4][5][10]

  • 1 sachet to about 6 L hot water
  • Up to 1.5 kg clothes
  • 4 h minimum, up to 24 h

Dr. Beckmann's bucket method: [10][11]

  1. Dissolve one sachet in about 6 litres of hot water (above 30 °C, or the hottest the care label allows).
  2. Add up to 1.5 kg of clothes. Don't add detergent. Keep them fully under the water, weighed down with a plate if needed.
  3. Cover the container and soak for at least 4 hours. For best results, soak overnight, up to 24 hours.
  4. Rinse several times in clean water, or wash separately in the machine.
  5. Stubborn colour run? You can repeat it. Wear rubber gloves.

There's also a washing machine method. The steps differ between pack versions, so follow the instructions on your pack. [10][11]

Not suitable

Dr. Beckmann lists these as not suitable: synthetic fibres, jeans, and indanthrene dyes. If the pink survives an overnight soak, the dye has bonded and the remover won't shift it. [10]

Step4

Chlorine bleach

White cotton only, last resort

Use this only if the item is white or colourfast and the care label allows bleach. Dilute it as the bottle says, and test on a hidden seam first.

If the pink hasn't gone after 15 minutes, bleach won't remove it, and a longer soak just weakens the fabric. [5][6]

Never

Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners. [5][6]

How to test for colourfastness

From Dr. Beckmann UK: [9]

  1. Pick a hidden spot, such as a hem, an underarm or the inside of a pocket.
  2. Dampen it and apply a little of the product. Leave it for up to 10 minutes.
  3. Blot with a white cloth. If any colour comes off on the cloth, don't use that product on that item.

Stop it happening again

  • Wash whites separately. Vanish says cream, light grey and pastels are safe with whites. [1]
  • Wash new or bright clothes on their own the first few times, because new dye runs most. [1]
  • A colour-catcher sheet in mixed loads can help. [12]
