Drool stains on pillowcases and T-shirts: how to get them out

Dribble marks are a body stain, so they respond to the same thing as sweat and blood: an enzyme pre-treat or soak, then a normal wash.

Quick answer

  1. !Don't dry or iron it until the mark has gone.
  2. 1Pre-treat with an enzyme product
  3. 2Soak (whites and colours differ)
  4. 3Wash with an oxygen bleach
  5. 4Dry it outside

Match your situation

Your situationTry this
White pillowcases and sheetsSoak in a whites stain remover such as Vanish Oxi Action Crystal White (step 2). [2]
Coloured pillowcases or T-shirtsPour a coloured-fabric stain remover on, rub, then a shorter soak (step 2). [2]
Baby clothes or sensitive skinMany parents prefer non-bio detergent for babies. It has no enzymes, so you may need a slightly higher temperature for tough stains. [3]
Marks on the pillow itselfCheck the pillow's care label before washing it. [5]

Step1

Pre-treat with an enzyme product

The American Cleaning Institute's advice for bodily fluids is to pre-treat or soak in a product that contains enzymes, then wash. [1]

  1. Apply a little biological liquid detergent neat to the mark, after testing it on a hidden area. [6]
  2. Then soak (step 2) or wash.
Step2

Soak

  • 60 g in 4 L (whites)
  • Whites 6 h max
  • Colours 1 h max

Vanish UK, for white pillowcases and sheets: [2]

  1. Add one scoop (60 g) of Vanish Oxi Action Crystal White powder to 4 litres of water.
  2. Soak for up to 6 hours.
  3. Rub the stain before rinsing.

For coloured bedding: [2]

  1. Pour 100 ml of Vanish Oxi Action gel onto the stained item and rub gently.
  2. Soak in 4 litres of water: up to 1 hour for colours.
  3. Rub the stain before rinsing.
Step3

Wash with an oxygen bleach

Wash using a bleach that's safe for the fabric. The American Cleaning Institute suggests chlorine bleach if the fabric allows it, otherwise an oxygen bleach. [1]

Biological detergents work well at lower temperatures, and Dr. Beckmann recommends them for 30 °C and 40 °C washes. [4][7]

Never mix

Never mix stain removers, especially ammonia and bleach. [5]

Step4

Dry it outside

Vanish suggests hanging white sheets out to dry on a sunny day instead of tumble drying. [2]

Check the mark has gone before you put the item in a dryer or iron it. [5]

Stop it happening again

  • Deal with marks while they're fresh. Fresh stains are easier to remove because they haven't set into the fabric. [8]
  • Treat a mark as soon as you see it, rather than waiting for wash day. [8]
