Small mark? Spot-clean it
Levi's says that for minor stains you can spot clean with a damp cloth, a soft brush and mild soap instead of washing the whole garment. [1]
It saves the colour, too: every full wash is a chance for denim to fade. [3]
Spot-clean small marks, pre-treat bigger ones, then wash cold and inside out. Hot washes are what fade denim.
| Your situation | Try this |
|---|---|
| A small mark on otherwise clean jeans | Spot-clean only that area (step 1). [1] |
| Food, drink or grass stain | Pre-treat (step 2), then wash (step 3). For grass, see grass stains. |
| Dark or black jeans | Use a detergent made for dark colours, wash cold and keep them out of direct sun. [1][2] |
| White denim | Use a whites stain remover such as Vanish Oxi Action Crystal White. [3] Levi's says a moderate amount of bleach can be used for tough stains. [2] |
| Raw (unwashed) denim | Hand wash only: cold water and mild detergent, soak about 30 minutes, and don't wring. [2] |

For white denim, use Vanish Oxi Action Crystal White powder the same way. [3]
Test any stain remover on a hidden part, such as inside the waistband, before using it. [4]
Levi's also suggests skipping fabric conditioner, which can leave a residue on denim, and using a vinegar rinse instead. [2]
